The Names Genetic Genealogy Gave Back

For decades, unidentified people were reduced in public records to placeholders: Jane Doe, John Doe, a county name, a road, a garment, a year.
Those labels were necessary for investigators. They were never identities.
A person’s name carries a life behind it. It connects school records to family photographs, a childhood home to an adult journey, and a missing-person report to the person whose absence changed a family. Restoring that name does not repair every loss. It does not answer every question. It does something more basic and, in its own way, profound: it returns the dead to the human story that belonged to them.
Forensic genetic genealogy has become known largely for identifying suspects in long-unsolved crimes. But one of its clearest public benefits lies elsewhere. The same combination of DNA analysis, responsible database searching, family-tree research, documentary records, and conventional confirmation can identify people whose names were lost after death.
The method does not make a database “name” someone. A laboratory develops a DNA profile suitable for genealogical comparison. Researchers examine matches from people who have chosen to participate under the database’s rules. They build family trees, test relationships against records, and develop a possible identity. Law enforcement or a medical examiner then confirms that identity through an accepted method, often direct family-reference DNA, dental comparison, fingerprints, or another forensic process.
The genealogy produces a lead. The confirmation gives the person back their name.
These five cases are not presented as crime stories. They are stories of identity restored: a daughter whose mother kept the same telephone number, a teenager who left home to swim, a woman whose relatives preserved family history, a missing Virginia student, and a Hawaiian man whose final journey ended in the forests of Washington.
Marcia Lenore King: Her Mother Kept the Same Number
Marcia Lenore King was 21 years old and from Arkansas. She had left home in 1980 and traveled beyond the places her family knew. According to later reporting, her mother remained in the same house and kept the same telephone number for years in case Marcia called.
In April 1981, a young woman was found near Troy, Ohio. Investigators preserved fingerprints, dental information, physical descriptions, and the distinctive buckskin jacket she had been wearing. Still, no comparison produced her name. The public came to know her as “Buckskin Girl.”
That name kept the case visible, but it also turned one object into the shorthand for an entire person.
She remained unidentified for nearly 37 years.
In 2017, the Miami County authorities brought the case to the newly formed DNA Doe Project. A usable DNA profile was compared in a genealogy database. The work produced a match to a first cousin, allowing genealogists to build toward the correct branch of a family tree. Authorities announced in April 2018 that Buckskin Girl was Marcia King.
Her identification became the first publicly announced success in which genetic genealogy restored the name of an unidentified decedent. It showed that a Doe case could be approached not only by comparing the dead against lists of missing people, but by starting with living relatives whose shared DNA could point back toward a family.
Marcia’s family asked for privacy and did not issue a public statement. That choice belongs in the story too. Closure is not a performance owed to the public. A restored name can return a person to family without requiring that family to narrate its grief.
The important sentence is not that “Buckskin Girl” was solved.
It is that her name was Marcia Lenore King.

Renee Isabel Nilsson: Fourteen Years Old, Missing After She Left to Swim
Renee Isabel Nilsson was 14 years old in the spring of 1984. Her family said she left her Phoenix-area home to go swimming and did not return. They reported her missing.
Two weeks later, partial remains of an adolescent girl were found in Phoenix. Investigators did not connect them to Renee. Early estimates placed the unidentified girl in her later teens, and she became known in the files as Del Rey Jane Doe.
For more than 40 years, two records existed without meeting: a missing 14-year-old named Renee and an unidentified girl recovered in the same city.
The Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner referred the case to the DNA Doe Project in 2023. By May 2024, a DNA profile suitable for forensic genetic genealogy had been developed. Genealogists examined relatives who shared portions of DNA with the unknown girl, built family connections from public records, and narrowed the possibilities until Renee emerged as the likely identity. Familial DNA comparison then supported the identification.
The announcement came in 2025.
Renee’s story demonstrates why age estimates and other biological assessments must be treated as ranges, not identities. Even a small gap between an estimated age and a missing child’s actual age can keep two files apart for decades. Genetic genealogy can cross that gap because it asks a different question: not “Who matches this description?” but “To which family does this DNA belong?”
There is little publicly released detail about Renee’s personality, interests, or daily life. That absence should not be filled with imagined scenes. What is documented is enough to restore her place in the record: she was a 14-year-old girl, she was missed, her family reported her disappearance, and she had a name long before the case had one.

Gail Marlene Johnson: A Family Story Reconnected
Gail Marlene Johnson was 40 years old and had lived in the Minneapolis area. For 23 years after her remains were found in New Brighton, Minnesota, investigators did not know that.
She was discovered in Long Lake Regional Park in September 2000. Traditional investigative methods did not establish her identity. The New Brighton Department of Public Safety continued to preserve the case and later partnered with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the DNA Doe Project.
A DNA profile was developed from Gail’s remains. Genealogists searched databases available for investigative use and began building family trees from her genetic matches. One of the most useful moments did not come from a database alone. It came through conversation.
A great-aunt shared the family’s history with the research team. Genealogy is often described as records work—birth certificates, obituaries, census pages, marriage records—but families also carry knowledge that no index fully captures. Oral history can explain migrations, informal names, relationships, and branches that official records leave unclear.
The combined work pointed to Gail. New Brighton investigators then obtained a DNA sample from a family member, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirmed the biological relationship.
Authorities announced her name in September 2023, exactly 23 years after she was found.
DNA Doe Project team leader Amy Boyle later described how unusual and valuable it was to hear the great-aunt tell the family’s story. Her words are a reminder that identity restoration is not merely a technical match. It reconnects an unidentified person to people who remember where a family came from and how its members belonged to one another.
Gail was no longer only the subject of a cold-case file in New Brighton. She was Gail Marlene Johnson of Minneapolis, a member of a family whose own history helped bring her home.

Margaret Fetterolf: A Missing Student, Not “Woodlawn Jane Doe”
Margaret Fetterolf was born in 1959 and lived in Alexandria, Virginia. She attended Hayfield Secondary School. Her family reported her missing after she disappeared in 1975.
In September 1976, the body of an unidentified teenage girl was found near Lorraine Park Cemetery in Woodlawn, Maryland. Investigators collected fingerprints and dental information and circulated reconstructions over the years. The case received national attention. Leads came and went. None restored her name.
For 45 years, she was known as Woodlawn Jane Doe.
The eventual identification required several organizations and more than one kind of forensic work. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children assisted the investigation. Othram developed a genealogical DNA profile from the available evidence. Bode Technology genealogists used that profile to develop investigative leads. Baltimore County investigators then worked to confirm the result.
In September 2021, authorities announced that Woodlawn Jane Doe was Margaret Fetterolf, 16 years old.
The identification did not resolve every question surrounding her death. It did correct the first and most enduring wrong in the public record: Margaret had been discussed for decades without the name her family had given her.
Her case also illustrates the discipline required when writing about restored identities. The circumstances of her death remain part of an open homicide investigation. No responsible account should imply guilt by association, rumor, or genealogy. Genetic genealogy identified Margaret. It did not, by itself, establish who caused her death.
The restored identity changes how the story is told. “Woodlawn Jane Doe” describes where an unknown body was found. “Margaret Fetterolf” describes a girl who lived in Virginia, attended school, had a family, and was reported missing.
The second is the story that should lead.

Joseph Louis Serrao Jr.: A Name Returned From the Olympic Forest
Joseph Louis Serrao Jr. was a Hawaii native. Public records released after his identification say he had last been heard from in 1998. His path after that point was unknown to the people looking for him.
In July 2000, a researcher in Olympic National Park found human remains inside a sleeping bag in a tent in the remote Sol Duc River drainage. The location was difficult, the remains had been there for an extended period, and no identification was present. The case became Sol Duc Backcountry John Doe.
Investigators estimated that the man had been between 30 and 50 years old. His information was eventually entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, but database comparisons did not give him a name.
The National Park Service Investigative Services Branch and the King County Medical Examiner’s Office later pursued advanced DNA testing. Othram developed a genealogical profile and used genetic matches and family-tree research to generate an investigative lead. Follow-up work connected the remains to Joseph, and the identification was publicly announced by the National Park Service in June 2026.
He had been without his name in the official record for nearly 26 years.
Joseph’s case differs from the others in this survey because no public allegation of homicide accompanied the identification announcement. The National Park Service release focused on the long collaboration required to identify a man found in one of the country’s largest protected landscapes.
That makes the central achievement especially clear. The science did not need a prosecution to justify the work. Identification itself mattered.
A remote place can preserve a person’s final location while erasing nearly every ordinary route back to identity. There may be no wallet, no readable document, no fingerprint match, and no missing-person record that investigators know to compare. Genealogy can rebuild that route through kinship.
The man in the Sol Duc drainage was not simply a hiker, a campsite, or a NamUs number. He was Joseph Louis Serrao Jr. His identification returned an answer to a family and a name to the historical record of Olympic National Park.

What It Means to Give a Name Back
Forensic genetic genealogy is powerful because it combines two kinds of evidence that are often discussed separately.
DNA establishes biological relationships. Genealogy explains how those relationships fit into a family.
Neither is enough alone. A DNA match may indicate that two people share ancestry without identifying the exact path between them. A family tree may look persuasive while containing errors, adoptions, informal parentage, name changes, or missing records. Good work requires both disciplines, followed by independent confirmation.
The cases above also show why identification is not a lesser outcome than solving a crime. A family may have spent decades not knowing whether a missing relative was alive. A medical examiner may have safeguarded remains under a placeholder because no conventional comparison worked. A community may have tended a grave marked only by an unknown designation. Restoring a name answers the oldest question in the file.
Who was this person?
The answer does not belong first to true-crime audiences, documentarians, or investigators. It belongs to the person and to those who knew them.
Marcia King was more than the jacket that became her nickname. Renee Nilsson was more than an age estimate that did not quite fit. Gail Johnson was connected to a family whose history helped identify her. Margaret Fetterolf was a student reported missing from Virginia. Joseph Serrao was a Hawaii man whose name followed him, at last, into the record of the Olympic forest.
There are thousands of unidentified people still listed in the United States alone. Not every case will yield usable DNA. Not every profile will find meaningful matches. Privacy rules, database participation, funding, sample quality, family structure, and historical records all shape what is possible.
But when the method works, its most humane result can be stated without drama.
Someone who had been called unknown is known again.
